Nijmegen, Gelderland, Waal and floodplains
Along the river coast of Nijmegen
Between city,
bridges and river
A strong combination of river landscape, urban nature, bridges and the skyline of Nijmegen.
This makes the route special
- The crossing via the Snelbinder
- Spiegelwaal, Zaligebrug and the island of Veur-Lent
- Fort Lent and lunch at Stroom
- Rugged urban nature in the Stadwaard
- View of the Nijmegen skyline and Waalkade
To take into account
- On the Waalbrug you share the space with many cyclists and traffic
- Keep your distance from cattle and wild horses in the Stadwaard
- After wet weather, strolling paths along the water can be muddy
From station to river
The walk along the Waal near Nijmegen starts at the Snelbinder
This walk along the Waal near Nijmegen quickly reaches the cycling and walking bridge next to the railway from the lively station area, where the landscape suddenly becomes wide and open.
The Waal flows below you, with ships in the distance and wide banks on either side. Despite trains, cyclists and traffic, the crossing has something calm because of the enormous view.
The Snelbinder immediately sets the tone for this walk. Bridges not only connect both river banks, but always provide a new perspective on water, floodplains and the city.

From the bridge the view opens up over the Waal and the skyline of Nijmegen.
Room for the river
Along the Spiegelwaal to the Zaligebrug
You descend via a staircase to the Oosterhoutsedijk and reach the Spiegelwaal. This secondary channel helps to absorb high water and at the same time grew into a popular place for walkers, cyclists and water sports enthusiasts.
The Zaligebrug takes you back to Veur-Lent. From here you literally walk between two waterways, with the wide Waal on one side and the quiet Spiegelwaal on the other.

Water safety and recreation come together in an open river landscape.
Between two waterways
Island Veur-Lent continues to change constantly
Due to the construction of the Spiegelwaal, part of the mainland became an island in the middle of the river zone. The terrain is partly open and partly overgrown.
Strolling is allowed. Sand, grass, willows and wind determine the atmosphere, while the skyline of Nijmegen, De Overstuk and the industrial contours of the former Honigfabriek appear on the horizon.

A special island with space to stroll along sand, grass and willows.

Waal on the left, Spiegelwaal on the right
Cargo ships, kayakers, birds and the city all move through the same broad panorama.
Fort Lent and Stroom
From river landscape to a good lunch spot
Under the Snelbinder you climb again to the dike towards Lent. The landscape becomes more urban, with brick, avenues and the greenery of the Strowijk.
Stroom is located near Fort Lent, a former power station that has been given a new purpose as a catering location. After the open river kilometers this is a natural place for an extended break.

History, reuse and catering come together here near the river.
A green residential area
Through the Strowijk back towards Veur-Lent
After lunch the route takes you through a surprisingly green neighborhood with trees, quiet streets and vistas. The river slowly comes back into view via the Oudedijk.
The Waal Bridge closes this part of the route. It is the busiest point of the walk, but from the bridge you can see beautifully where you previously walked along the water.

The broad river landscape returns via green streets and the dike.
Urban nature on the other side
The Stadwaard is the roughest part of the walk
After the Waal Bridge you almost immediately dive into a landscape of quiet waterfronts, grasslands and wide unpaved paths. The city suddenly seems much further away here.
Cattle help keep the area open and with a bit of luck you will see wild horses or special birds. In summer, swimmers and sun lovers also visit the banks.

Grasslands, water and large grazers form a rugged contrast with the nearby city.
Back via the Waalkade
The city returns to the water
Under the Waal Bridge, the quiet nature slowly changes into a lively city quay.
Walkers, cyclists, terraces and shipping come together on the Waalkade. An Italian ice cream at IJscafé Waterwolf is a nice ending after the long round.
You can walk the last part back to Nijmegen station via the Snelbinder. After 14.5 kilometers, the walk along the Waal near Nijmegen ends with a surprisingly complete picture of the river, from modern hydraulic engineering to wild nature and city life.

Catering, ships and cityscapes ensure a lively last kilometer.
