The story of the route
Pilgrim’s Path, cards 7–9 from start to finish
This stage takes you along the Amstel-Drecht Canal and over old dikes towards Papenveer. Along the way you will pass bridges, forts, a Lourdes cave and the Tolhuis lock: a varied tour full of water and history.
This stage starts on the outskirts of Aalsmeer, near the flower auction. You walk on quiet paths along ditches, canals and grass dikes. The route takes you via the Zwarteweg to the village of De Kwakel, with long sight lines, bridges and grazing sheep in the landscape along the way. The sound of the Randstad is never far away, but this part still feels surprisingly rural.
This makes this stage of the Pilgrim’s Path interesting for those who love variety and nature.

Westeinderplassen
Westeinderplassen
The Westeinderplassen are the largest contiguous lake area in the Randstad. They are located south of Aalsmeer and were created by centuries of peat extraction. The area consists of dozens of ponds, ditches, reed collars and so-called legakkers, narrow strips of land between the water. Many of these legakkers are only accessible by boat and are used for recreation, fishing or flower growing. You don’t always see them directly from the Pilgrim’s Path.
The area is popular with water sports enthusiasts and forms a natural buffer between Aalsmeer and the Groene Hart.

A characteristic moment on this walk.
Westeinderplassen, further along the way
The water tower at the Westeinderplassen was built in 1927 and is still a landmark in the landscape. The tower marks the former water extraction area of Aalsmeer and offers a photogenic view over the lakes. From the shore, the silhouette of the tower is a beautiful eye-catcher while walking on the Pilgrim’s Path.

A characteristic moment on this walk.
Map 08 De Kwakel-Huis ter Lucht
This short stage takes you over a beautiful dike between the Amstel-Drecht Canal and open meadows. You pass Fort De Kwakel, cross white drawbridges and follow the towpath along the canal. You end close to Huis ter Lucht, an old farm with a view over the canal.

A characteristic moment on this walk.
Characteristic on the road
Over old dikes to the forts of the Defense Line
White bridges and historic defenses appear between canals and open meadows, with Fort De Kwakel as a recognizable resting point along the way.
Fort de Kwakel
Fort De Kwakel is part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam, built in 1906 and now repurposed as an exhibition location and café. The site is surrounded by flower beds and summer vegetation, and the fort itself is still easily recognizable with its bridge, loopholes and thick walls.
The Fire Line is a striking, straight dike body between Fort De Kwakel and Fort bij Kudelstaart. It is part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam, a defense line from the 19th century that was intended to protect the capital against enemy attacks. The Fire Line consists of grass dikes, locks, bridges and old battery sites, once intended to quickly move troops or allow water to flow to flood the area.

A characteristic moment on this walk.
Fort de Kwakel, further along the way
Moreover, along the Pelgrimspad you will pass these special defenses.

My experience
A route that retains its own character
Bilderdam is a small hamlet on the border of South Holland and North Holland, located along the Amstel-Drecht Canal. This was once a strategic location with a transfer point for goods and an important bridge connection. Nowadays it is a quiet hamlet with a few farms, ribbon buildings and a view of the water. In summary, this stage of the Pilgrim’s Path offers a lot of variety and beautiful Dutch landscapes.
Pelgrimspad, maps 7–9 combines the most important landscapes and stories from Aalsmeer to Nieuwveen in one walking day.
