The story of the route
Pilgrim’s Path, cards 4–6 from start to finish
This stage of the Pelgrimspad takes you from the Amsterdamse Bos to Aalsmeer, straight through nature, culture and contrasts. You walk past blossom trees, old churches and the airspace of Schiphol.
You start this stage in the Amsterdamse Bos at the Bosbaan. You walk towards the A9 via straight avenues, bridges and quiet forest paths. Along the way you pass the Dachau monument and walk in a green area towards the edge of the city.

The Amsterdam Forest
The Amsterdam Forest
The Amsterdamse Bos is one of the largest urban forests in the Netherlands and was designed in the 1930s as a job creation project. The forest was built entirely by hand by thousands of unemployed people. Today it is a versatile recreational area with water features, hiking trails, forests and open meadows.
You will find more than 200 bridges, designed in the characteristic Amsterdam School style, and long sight lines that are typical of the original landscape design. The forest attracts millions of visitors every year: walkers, cyclists, athletes and nature lovers. In the spring the Blossom Park blooms spectacularly, and in the autumn the avenues turn deep red and golden yellow.

A characteristic moment on this walk.
The Amsterdamse Bos, further along the way
Despite its proximity to the city, the forest is a haven with a surprisingly rich flora and fauna. Herons, woodpeckers, foxes and even kingfishers are regularly spotted here. At the same time, it is a lively park with an open-air theater, climbing parks and even a goat farm.

A characteristic moment on this walk.
Map 05 Viaduct A9-Bosrandweg
A varied route through the southern part of the Amsterdamse Bos. You walk past the Bloesem Park and De Poel, with beautiful views and bird-rich areas. Via the Schinkelbos you reach the Bosrandweg, where the forest slowly changes into open landscape.

Characteristic on the road
From urban forest to blossom, water and bird-rich banks
In the south of the Amsterdamse Bos, the Bloesempark and De Poel follow each other, two very different landscapes within one green stage.
Blossom park
The Bloesempark is one of the most popular places in the Amsterdamse Bos, especially in early spring. In 2000, 400 ornamental cherries were planted here, a donation from the Japanese women’s club in the Netherlands. Each tree was given a name, half Japanese, the other half Dutch, as a symbol of friendship between the two countries.
During flowering in March or April, the park turns into a sea of white-pink blossoms, creating a fairytale atmosphere. It is therefore the place for a spring walk, a picnic or a photo opportunity. Outside the blossom period, the park is a quiet open space in the middle of the forest, surrounded by grass and water.

A characteristic moment on this walk.
The Pool
De Poel is a large, shallow lake on the edge of Amstelveen, directly adjacent to the Amsterdamse Bos. It is an old peat area that once served as a peat extraction site. Nowadays it is an open water where you can see beautiful reflections of the sky and the trees.
Reeds, cattails and willows grow along the banks, and you often see grebes, herons and other water birds here. On the east side is the village with the characteristic Urbanus Church, on the west side is the greenery of the forest. The view over De Poel is a quiet and photogenic moment on the route.

A characteristic moment on this walk.
My experience
A route that retains its own character
Although Aalsmeer has now largely merged with the Randstad, the village has retained its own character. The atmosphere is rural, with flower fields and boats on the quay. Anyone who still has energy afterwards can take a look at the bustling area of FloraHolland, the largest flower auction in the world, via the Ringvaart.
Pelgrimspad, maps 4–6 combines the most important landscapes and stories from Amsterdamse Bos to Aalsmeer in one walking day.
